Against Putin and Corruption, for Navalny and the “Revolution”?

This article seeks to provide a better understanding of the dynamics nationwide protests that appeared in Russia as result large-scale political campaigns 2017–18. On basis an original database devoted six protests, organized this period by different anti-systemic opposition leaders and organizations, study explores turnout geographic scope these events repertoire frames were used mobilize protesters. The analysis contrasts three types (an anti-corruption protest frame, election campaign event frame) demonstrates appropriate framing was necessary condition successful mobilization. In combination with other factors, such quality organization impact repressive actions authorities, changes contributed protests’ dynamics. Alexei Navalny, most popular leader, succeeded organizing initial mobilization it protest, but then, under increasing repression, failed convert dissent into longer-term broader electoral or frames.
